For all Hard Drive Enclosures:
1. Verify your hard drive's interface. A SATA hard drive will have two small, flat plastic tabs with metal contacts on one side. An IDE (also called EIDE, PATA, or ATA) drive will have two rows of tiny pins which stick out of the connector. SATA and IDE are not compatible, so be sure you have the correct hard drive enclosure before starting.
2. Take apart the two halves of the enclosure. There may be a small tab or indentation somewhere on the case's edge, from which you can pull apart the top and bottom.
3. Orient your hard drive's connectors to align with the circuit board connectors inside the enclosure. Use gentle but firm pressure to attach the hard drive. (For IDE drives, be careful not to bend the pins.)
4. Close the case back up. If any mounting screws were included in your package, screw them in to secure the drive.
5. When you're ready to access the drive, plug the USB cable into the drive and then into the computer. Your hard drive enclosure package may have come with a USB "Y" cable. The extra USB connector is designed to provide additional power to run the hard drive. When you are finished accessing the drive, shut it down before physically disconnecting it so that you don't accidentally lose data. To shut down the drive in Windows: Click the "Eject Hardware" icon in the System Tray are of the Taskbar (near the clock). Select the drive and click 'Stop'. The computer will tell you when you can disconnect it. To shut down a drive in Mac: drag the icon of your drive from the desktop to the Trash.
